List of races involving Striders - July, August and September 2006
Ashbourne half marathon - Sunday 17th September 2006 (full results)
A cool misty early morning gave way to a very warm day for this year's Ashbourne Half. 200 runners competed in a challenging scenic course in the Derbyshire Dales with a similar number in the Fun Run.
The course has fantastic views, some uphill sections but with a fast downhill 4-mile section through tree lined country roads. The weather on the day was very windy.
City to Surf 12km, Perth Australia - Sunday 27th August 2006 (full results)
This event claims to be the largest race timed by chip in Australia. There were 9,534 finishers in the 12km run, 6,376 in the 12km walk, 20 in the 11km wheel chair race and 5,382 in the 4km run/walk. The 12km route was as described, starting in the centre of Perth and following an undulating course to the city beach. The weather at 8am start of the race was perfect for road racing (8 degrees, sunny with not a cloud in the sky). By the time the last competitor came home in just under 3 hours it was perfect for the Aussie BBQs (28 degrees and not a cloud in the sky). Waking up early for the race when it was still dark (it is winter down under of course) to find that there was power cut caused a few pre-race problems: the bathroom was without a window and our car - and transport to the start of the race - was electronically locked inside the garage! But the overall experience of the event was excellent and one not to be missed.
Bradbourne Fell Race - Sunday 27th August 2006 (full results)
This was a tough 6 mile run with over 600 feet of climbing over the two-lap course. After some heavy rain the course was also unseasonably boggy in places, more reminiscent of a Winter cross-country event. There were 80 runners in field.
Striders Graves Park Hadicap Race - Wednesday 12th July 2006
This was the final race in the July Week of Events. The course was two short laps of Graves Park; approximately four and half miles in length with plenty of twists and turns. The course was well marked, with tape at every junction, but following the correct route proved to be problematic when the local 'yuf', out in force in the park on a warm evening, decided it would be smart to switch some of the indicaters around causing several of the runners to take the wrong route on lap one. The race was won by Mark Bennehan who actually started off scratch. The times below are the accruded times from the time the first runners set off. The 'actual' times will be added in due course.
